Event #2- Fowler Museum

For Event #2 I visited the Fowler Museum on campus at UCLA. Within the Museum I was really intrigued by the history of the art that was within it and what different pieces of art were representing. First thing that I saw was a piece that spoke upon the history of the art in general. As you can see in the picture below, the artwork wasn't originally made to be pieces of art, but instead was made to fulfill needs in their everyday lives. People used to have to create things from nature in order to have needs with them that we can just order online today. These pieces had great appearances, so they were eventually given the title of "artwork".

Next, I saw a section talking about woman's pieces of artwork. They had textures that were primarily made from the women at the time. The women made these for a very crucial part of the lives of the people during this time because they were used for dresses, blankets, and ceremonial outfits. Back in time, women were often given the stereotype of not having importance as far as labor, but instead were just used to take care of the family and the children. This work proves otherwise, as many people were dependent on them getting  these different textures.

The last piece of artwork that I viewed i found very interesting. This particular part of the museum was showing pieces of jewelry and masks that showed the different status prestige levels that belonged to the people depending on what they wore. We now look back on these pieces as artwork because of their details and beauty that came along with them, but back in the time they were pieces of jewelry that were actually worn by people.

After visiting the Fowler museum I had a change in mind about what the artwork came from and what is was all about when it was originally created. Before, i simply thought that all artwork was made in once sitting and just made as art to look at, but now i understand that it comes from all different things. Specifically in this museum, I was able to see how the artwork was used at first as essentials for the people in this time period. This impacts me because it lets me see a different side to art and also how people used to live and what supplies they were limited to at the time. Instead of being miserable about what they had to use, they were able to create beautiful pieces of art that we look at today. I strongly recommend people to take a visit to Fowler Museum on the UCLA campus, as it really opens your perspective on what artwork was originally created for.
